The Representation of Gender and Region in Gavin and Stacey Episode 1

Gavin and Stacey is a series that follows the lives of a Welsh and an English family, The Welsh being on Barry island and the English being in Essex. In the episode we watched (episode 1), Gavin and Stacey are going to meet for the first time in London. They are different in many ways but here are a few stereotypical examples.

Stacey's Welsh family live in a house on a terrace, stereotypically wearing unbranded clothing and the like, whilst Gavin's family lives in a detached house with trendy kitchen fittings and lighting, showing a difference in money and status. They use real sets, but when you look at the lighting in the different houses the Welsh house is rather dark and gloomy, and the English house is light and chirpy. There's many two-shots, as there's a lot of conversation, and the cameramen use jump shots to get from time to time. They have exaggerated accents that clearly shows where they are from, and the Welsh are shown to be stereotypically silly and poor. It's a typical cliche. The Essex woman is on the Atkins diet, whilst the men are eating loads of chips. The men are playing golf with girls, but they dont want the wife to know about it.
